How Marie Leguizamo Took Over TV

What’s one decision that can change everything? Marie Leguizamo has the answer.

As Managing Director of Banijay Mexico + US Hispanic, a division of Banijay America, she’s built a career on making bold decisions. And they’ve led her to create some of the biggest television brands across the U.S. and Latin America.

With over two decades in the industry, she’s produced record-breaking unscripted hits like Amazon Prime’s “LOL: Last One Laughing” and “Jalas o Te Rajas.” She’s been named one of Hollywood Reporter’s “Most Powerful Women in International Television” and Hola’s “100 Latina Powerhouses.”

One of her biggest secrets to success? She says she learned to bet on herself.

How Marie Leguizamo Took Over TV

In the following Q&A, Leguizamo tells me about some of the obstacles she’s had to overcome. She also shares some advice for those looking to follow her lead. Read on. And be prepared to be inspired, empowered, and ready to make that life-changing decision,

NS: Marie, you’ve built an amazing career in entertainment, to say the least. What’s the one decision you made that changed everything for you?

ML: Honestly, deciding to bet on myself. I stopped waiting for permission or the “perfect” moment and started diving into projects that felt risky or uncomfortable. If it scared me, it probably meant I should do it. That mindset — trusting my instincts and taking calculated risks — changed everything. I learned that no one’s going to create the path for you; sometimes, you have to pave it yourself.

NS: What’s a moment in your life when you felt like giving up, and how did you push through?

ML: There have definitely been moments when I questioned if I was on the right path. This industry can make you feel like you’re constantly proving yourself. There was a time when I felt stuck, unsure if my efforts were making a difference. What kept me grounded was remembering my purpose — why I started this journey in the first place. I reconnected with my passion for storytelling and creating opportunities for others. When you remind yourself of your “why,” it gets a little easier to push through the noise.

NS: You’re a Latina leader in an industry that’s still catching up on representation. What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to the next generation trying to break in?

ML: Own your space. Don’t shrink yourself to fit in—bring your full, authentic self into every room. Our culture, our perspective, our voices are powerful and necessary. Take pride in that. Be relentless, build genuine relationships, and understand that your background is an asset, not a limitation. We’re finally seeing more representation, but the work isn’t done. Keep pushing because your voice matters.

NS: What’s the one habit you swear by that keeps you grounded and moving forward, no matter what?

ML: Consistency and discipline. This industry moves fast, and it’s easy to get caught up or lose focus. Having structure — whether it’s in leading my team, managing my time, or setting clear goals — helps me stay on track. Also, staying connected to my family and my roots is a big part of keeping me grounded. It’s a balance between ambition and staying true to where I come from.

NS: How has your heritage shaped your leadership, and the way you show up in the world?

ML: My heritage is everything to me. Being Latina means understanding the power of resilience, community, and heart. It’s a responsibility. I feel a duty to create opportunities, to amplify voices that aren’t always heard, and to make sure authenticity is at the center of the stories we tell. My culture has taught me the importance of lifting as you climb, and that’s how I try to lead every day.
