Karol G Makes Latin Grammy History: The Queen of Urban Music Reigns Again

The 2024 Latin Grammys lit up Miami’s Kaseya Center last Thursday night, where stars gathered to celebrate the 25th annual awards. The evening kicked off with Carlos Vives performing a medley of hits, reminding everyone why he was named “Person of the Year.” Joe Jonas even popped in to duet with best new artist Ela Taubert. But the real headline? Karol G.

The Colombian superstar did what no woman had done before: she became the first to win the Best Urban Music Album trophy twice in a row, for her record  “Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season).” Take that, glass ceiling! Or should we say, “Muévete pa’ ‘llá, reggaetón ceiling?”

Karol G Thanks … Everyone

Karol G accepted her history-making award with a speech that was heartfelt and just the right amount of epic. “To be honest, my life, my music, and what happens to me each day is about this: the love of you all,” the Colombian singer said during her acceptance speech. “Thank you for this. Thank you to my team, God, and everyone.”

Karol G winning twice in a row proves she’s dominating playlists and rewriting the Latin Grammy rulebook. Men are not the only ones who can succeed at the reggaetón music genre, as she was once told. But it hasn’t been easy.

This all comes on the heels of one of the biggest controversies of her career. A lyric in her new song “+57,” featuring some of reggaetón’s most loved stars, was criticized for sexualizing children. To this, the singer wrote: “None of the things said in the song have the meaning they’ve been given, nor were sung with that perspective, but I hear you, and I take responsibility and I realize that I still have a lot to learn, … I feel very affected and I’m sorry from the heart.”
