“To be in this room … this is my community … it’s my circus,” she said, reflecting on the industry that has shaped her career. Saldaña, who has been breaking barriers for Latinas in Hollywood since Center Stage and Crossroads, reminded us that she’s been in this game for a long time. “I got my first SAG card in 1998. I didn’t even know what SAG was. … I am grateful that my mother and father and sisters looked it up and helped me educate myself to know what it means to be a part of a union that protects me so I can make a living out of this crazy, crazy industry.”
Selena Gomez’s Surprise Win
Then there’s Selena Gomez. She was surprised when her hit show Only Murders in the Building won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Gomez said in her acceptance speech, “Wait, we never win, this is so weird.”
The audience laughed.
The singer, actress, and producer added: “I’m genuinely so grateful (to) everybody, the writers … Everyone deserves this, and I take it home for all of us, and I’m bringing this back to New York for season five, thank you so much.”
The recognition of Gomez and Saldaña highlights the increasing presence of Latina actors in major awards ceremonies. Their achievements contribute to ongoing discussions about representation in the entertainment industry. A complete list of winners is available on the SAG website.
