It was \u00ab<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c5QfXjsoNe4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Girl From Ipanema,\u00bb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sung by Astrud Gilberto (born Astrud Evangelina Weinert), a Brazilian samba and bossa nova composer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The song was the first song Gilberto ever recorded, and thanks to her voice, she transformed bossa nova into an international phenomenon in the mid-1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the singer did not resemble the girl from Ipanema that her song described, her voice made anyone imagine long legs walking in front of a restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilberto had a prolific career spanning four decades until she unofficially retired in 2002. However, her life is an entire chapter in the history of Latin American music.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz - The Girl From Ipanema (1964) LIVE\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sVdaFQhS86E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A talent straight from Salvador de Bahia<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astrud Gilberto was born in 1940 in Salvador de Bahia and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. Thanks to her father, a language teacher, the singer grew up fluent in several languages, which would serve her well later in her career.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 19, Gilberto married <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/06\/arts\/music\/joao-gilberto-dead-bossa-nova.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jo\u00e3o Gilberto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with whom she experienced life as a professional musician for the first time. Although the young woman knew music, her husband took her to record her first song after seeing the reaction of their guests when they sang together at home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Jo\u00e3o, Gilberto often sang in Brazil. She recorded two tracks on the 1963 \u00abGetz\/Gilberto\u00bb album featuring Jo\u00e3o, saxophonist Stan Getz, and the iconic Ant\u00f4nio Carlos Jobin.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abWhile rehearsing with Stan, Jo\u00e3o casually asked me to join in and sing a chorus in English after he had just sung the first chorus in Portuguese,\u00bb Gilberto said in a 2002 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.astrudgilberto.com\/interview.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abStan was very receptive, in fact, very enthusiastic,\u00bb she continued. \u00abI&#8217;ll never forget that while we were listening back to the just recorded song at the studio&#8217;s control room, Stan said to me, with a very dramatic expression, &#8216;This song is going to make you famous.'\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just heard Astrud Gilberto passed away. However, although it sold over a million copies, the singer only received $120 in standard one-session fees.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was due to the intervention of Getz, with whom Gilberto had an extramarital affair until her divorce from Jo\u00e3o. The singer would confess many years later that her relationship with Getz was \u00abtortuous\u00bb and that she kept it up out of financial necessity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new life in the United States<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the love failures and after the success of bossa nova in the United States, Astrud Gilberto emigrated to the north. \u00abThe Girl from Ipanema\u00bb quickly became one of the most covered songs in pop music history, opening the doors to Hollywood for the singer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilberto <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/astrud-gilberto-girl-from-ipanema-b2006879.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in films such as \u00abGet Yourself a College Girl\u00bb and \u00abThe Hanged Man\u00bb in 1964. Just a year later, she released her first solo album, \u00abThe Astrud Gilberto Album.\u00bb Although her relationship with Getz continued for some time, Gilberto began recording her compositions in the 1970s. She formed her own band with his son Marcelo on bass.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abI think when my son Marcelo joined my group as my bass player in 1982, it was also a mark,\u00bb Gilberto <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.astrudgilberto.com\/interview.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00abHis presence in the group made me feel emotionally sheltered when we traveled, besides personally proud of his talents; these were happy influences in my life that were also positive influences in my productivity as an artist.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together with Marcelo and her second son, Gregory Lasorsa, Astrud Gilberto founded her own production company. By the early 1990s, she was already an icon. Gilberto received the Latin Jazz USA Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1992. I kinda like to take life one day at a time,\u00bb she said about her unofficial retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a fan of interviews, Gilberto quietly retired from the public scene and from the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astrud Gilberto said goodbye to the physical world on Monday, June 5, 2023.
