Does that name ring a bell? How about Rita Hayworth? Everyone knows Rita \u2014 the beautiful strawberry-blond actress \u2014 who Madonna forever immortalized in her song \u00abVogue.\u00bb \u00abThe Love Goddess\u00bb of the 1940s \u2014 who caught the eye of Agha Khan as she danced in a tight, strapless black gown in the movie <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilda. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pin-up model <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the second most popular pin-up model of World War II (only behind Betty Grable).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even today, few know that Margarita was Hispanic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margarita&#8217;s father was from Spain, born in a small town close to Seville; her mother, Volga Hayworth, was of Irish\/American descent. Rita&#8217;s famous flaming red hair was not red &#8211; it was jet black. She dyed it red and even altered her hairline because she worried about being typecast in &#8216;Hispanic&#8217; roles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rita encountered the same issues that most other Latina actresses of her time and others from today still do. She adopted her mother&#8217;s name to emphasize her Irish-American ancestry so she would be seen as classically \u00abAmerican.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Anthony Quinn<\/b><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/1\/1e\/Anthony_Quinn_around_the_1960s.jpg\/1024px-Anthony_Quinn_around_the_1960s.jpg\" alt=\"Anthony Quinn Latino Hidden Figure Hollywood\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example of a great hidden Latino actor was Anthony Quinn, born Manuel Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca in Chihuahua, Mexico. The son of fighters in the Mexican Revolution, he was virtually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biography.yourdictionary.com\/anthony-quinn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conceived on the battlefield.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinn would go on to win two Academy Awards \u2014 his first was for playing Eufemio Zapata in the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viva Zapata!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and had such earthy and chameleon-like looks that he was cast in everything from Greek to Chinese to Hawaiian and Indigenous roles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinn was a powerful actor (and a painter and writer) who played his roles with a passion that could only come from being Latino. Yet, even the man who embodied Zorba the Greek, and was supremely proud of being Mexican, at one point, changed his name to be accepted in Hollywood.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Raquel Welch\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our next hidden Latina actress was considered the third most beautiful star of her heyday in the 60s and 70s. Known for her films \u00abFantastic Voyage,\u00bb \u00abOne Million Years B.C.,\u00bb \u00abKansas City Bomber,\u00bb and \u00abThe Four Musketeers,\u00bb few are aware that Raquel Welch is Bolivian-American.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/88\/RaquelWelchApr2010%282%29.jpg\" alt=\"Welch\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty years into her career in show business, Welch finally claimed her heritage when she played Aunt Dora on \u00abAmerican Family,\u00bb a PBS television series about a Mexican-American family in East Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born Jo Raquel Tejada, Welch said she regrets whitewashing her culture to become famous. \u00abLatinos are here to stay. As citizen Raquel, I&#8217;m proud to be Latina,\u00bb she said during a speech <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/06\/11\/movies\/raquel-welch-reinvented-latina-familiar-actress-now-boasts-her-heritage.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the National Press Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the show was at its most popular.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Lynda Carter\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth and final star on our list of hidden Latinos of Hollywood is a singer and former beauty pageant winner that&#8217;s best known for playing a superhero. Of course, we&#8217;re talking about none other than Wonder Woman \u2014 the first female superhero to hit the big screen \u2014 who was played with bravado by Lynda Jean Cordova Carter, or Lynda Carter, as you probably know her.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/8\/84\/Lynda_Carter2_%28cropped2%29.jpg\/1920px-Lynda_Carter2_%28cropped2%29.jpg\" alt=\"Lynda Carter Hidden Latino Figure\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carter&#8217;s mother, Juana C\u00f3rdova, and grandmother were both from Chihuahua, Mexico. Carter herself said: \u00abAnd who says Wonder Woman is \u00abwhite\u00bb? I&#8217;m <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/22\/fashion\/lynda-carter-wonder-woman-united-nations.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half-Mexican.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bb Yes, the Wonder Woman of the 1970s, the heroine of so many young girls, was a Latina. But doesn&#8217;t it stand to reason?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, the former Miss World USA and actress\/singer Lynda Carter became the 15th Latina to receive a prestigious star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Latino stars of yesterday and today brought their talent and passion to the big screen in every way they knew. Sometimes it led them to make painful or controversial decisions to soften or outright hide their heritage. Still, in the case of these four Hidden Latino Figures of Hollywood and others, most returned to their roots and today continue as examples that all Latinos can be proud of.
