From the music that filters through the streets to the smells of carne asada over the grill and fresh tortillas on the comal, for many when they arrive in San Antonio’s historic Market Square, it feels like coming home.
This cultural hub has withstood the test of time for hundreds of years and has become known as the largest Latino-market square in the country. A place where it feels like a tradition is placed at the forefront. A place where you can hear the echoing footsteps of the ancestors as they dance along with you.
Our Hispanic and Latino ancestors made the best out of San Antonio
San Antonio, and Texas as a whole, played a large role in the formation of the new Southwest.
From its original roots as a home to a multitude of Indigenous tribes to the new borders created when the Spanish colonizers came to the land, to the onslaught of Anglo-European colonizers who followed in their stead, the land – one of the largest states in the area now known as America – has passed through many hands. Those hands, for better or worse, shaped the literal and metaphorical landscape of Texas, turning it into what it is today.
Through the constant change of hands, the San Antonio Market Square was an area that attempted to hold fast to as many traditions as possible. Founded originally as one of the plazas gifted by the Spanish to the colonizers who settled the land in 1730, Market Square today captures much of the same feelings as it did nearly 500 years ago. Through the preservation of both the archaeological and cultural landscape surrounding Market Square, visitors are able to take part in a piece of living history.
As it stands today, Market Square is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the area and is considered one of the largest Mexican markets in America.
